It's been about 4 years since Lizzie has been born and the first few years of Lizzie's life has been hard. Mack never had a good role model for a mother growing up so she tried her best to be the best mother to Lizzie. Sophie constantly told her that she was being a good mother to Lizzie but most days she doubted herself. What mother would allow her child to be kidnapped by her mom and her moms psycho boyfriend (who just so happens to be the father of Mack's baby- but we won't dwell on that).
It's been four years and Mack and Sophie were still together, not married but still engaged. Honestly, Mack had a lot going on in her life and she wasn't ready to rush getting married. They still lived in their apartment and Mack was going to talk to Soph about maybe looking into buying a house for the two of them instead of renting the apartment another lease cycle.
"Momma, when is Mommy coming home?"[/i] Lizzie asked as the two of them entered the apartment. Lizzie called Mack Momma and she often called Soph Mommy. Sometimes she would call them Mommy Mack and Mommy Sophie. So it really all depended on the day.
"She should be home soon baby. Why don't you go and play in your room," Mack suggested as she watched Lizzie run off to her room.
Mack shut the door behind her and locked it. While nothing bad has happened to them in a while, she was still paranoid when it came to Lizzie. Mack made her way to the kitchen and grabbed the bottle of wine and a wine glass. Mack typically didn't drink but tonight she felt like drinking the whole bottle.

The past four years had gone by quickly. Sophie wasn't used to actually being happy. When she was in New York, and especially when she was with Mackenzie, she didn't have to pretend to be someone she wasn't. She'd had plenty of friends in London, but recently she'd begun to think they weren't friends at all. There was far too much posturing for any genuine attachments to form.
Two years ago she had quit her job with her father. She didn't want to work for him. She wanted Lizzie to have a good life, and that meant keeping her family out of it. Instead, she had enrolled in college. That had always been her plan, but she had taken a year off to help take care of Lizzie. She also had a part time job to help pay the bills.
When she finally arrived home, she was happy to be back. She may have changed a lot in the past few years, but being around people still exhausted her. It was even harder to deal with sober.
"Hey, Bluebell," she greeted. Her smiled turned to a frown as she spotted the expression on Mack's face and the bottle of wine. Sophie had been trying to stay away from alcohol since the incident four years ago that landed her in the hospital. Between that and Mack's general disinterest in alcohol, they didn't keep much in the house. "Is everything ok?" she asked.

Mackenzie heard the door open and she froze for a split second. When she saw Sophie appear in the room, she visibly relaxed. She was glad it was Sophie because she really wasn't up to dealing with having to run right now. She saw Soph's smile turn into a frown and she glanced at the glass and bottle. "Just an uneasy feeling..." Mack muttered. "How was your day?"

Sophie frowned. “My day was fine,” she replied. She walked up and wrapped her arms around Mackenzie from behind. “Need to talk about anything, honey?” she asked. “I’m always here if you need to vent.”

Mackenzie heard Sophie and she felt Soph's arms around her. She lent back against her as she spoke. "I just... I know it's been 4 years but I feel like my mom is watching me," Mack whispered.

Mack heard what Sophie said and she frowned as she let her finger run around the rim of the glass. She heard her question. "Upstairs in her room. She asked me when you would be home the moment we stepped inside," Mack said softly.

Sophie nodded at Mack’s response. She would go see Lizzie in a bit. For now she wanted to stay with Mack until she was feeling better. “Are you still against putting your mom in jail?” she asked. “It wouldn’t even be hard, we have plenty of evidence against her.” She had known that before, but since she’d started studying law she’d realised just how easy it would be. Mackenzie’s mom had broken so many laws, and unlike Sophie’s family she didn’t have the money to get away with anything.

Mackenzie heard what Sophie said and she bit her lip. SHe knew that they could easily put her mom away in jail for a long time but the woman was still her mother. She believed her mom could change, she just needed help. "Soph..." Mack whispered. She rubbed her temples. "I'm not against it. I just-I want to believe she can change..."

Sophie sighed. “People don’t change, Mack,” she muttered. Even if her life had changed a lot in the past few years, her views on that hadn’t. “But I’m not going to pressure you to do anything you don’t want to. For now we’ll just keep her safe, and when she’s old enough we’ll make sure she knows how to defend herself. It’s going to be ok.”

"You did," Mack said turning in her arms to look at her. She knew that her mom was never going to change but she wanted to believe that her mom could. She bit her lip. "If she does anything to us, then we can get her locked up. But for now... we can just protect Lizzie and be vigilant."

Sophie sighed and shook her head. She should have seen that coming. “Bluebell, I didn’t change. I’m the same person I always was, I just stopped pretending to be someone different.”

"But you're Sophie..." Mack said softly. "The woman who I love and the woman I'm going to spend the rest of my life with.." She let her lips press against Sophie's cheek softly.

"And I've always been me. The good traits have always been there and the bad ones haven't magically disappeared." she argued, reaching up to brush a strand of hair out of Mackenzie's face. "Just like you're still you. Beautiful and kind and optimistic despite everything that woman has put your through."
