“I don’t think I will,” she replied, forcefully pulling open the door and stepping inside. “If you want Lizzie to be quiet I’m your best bet. But we do still need to talk.”

Sophie rolled her eyes. “Ms. Camden, I really recommend not lying to me. It might make me upset and who knows what would happen then. If I were you I wouldn’t want to find out.” she replied, making her way through the house to where Lizzie’s cries were coming from.

Sophie smiled softly as Sam let her approach Lizzie. Good. She picked up her daughter and rocked her against her chest, humming one of the lullabies her grandma had sang her growing up. After a moment when she started to calm down she turned her attention back to Sam. “Why did you take her?” she asked, “It couldn’t have been your idea. If you want your daughter back in your life this isn’t the way to go about it, and I don’t see any other reason you’d take her.”

Sophie held Lizzie slightly closer to her. “Ms. Camden, do you know what happens to a baby girl when she’s separated from her parents? The baby goes through a period where all she wants is her parents and she tries to find them except, since she’s a baby she can’t do much. After that she acts out. Both of those things will make her a pain for you, but, more importantly, it results in trauma and when the baby grows up she won’t even know what it’s from. That’s a cruel thing to put any person through.” she said. She remembered being told that’s how she had acted, that she should be more grateful her father put up with her behaviour back then. “Let me take Lizzie home. You and I can have a talk with Brendan to explain things and I promise I won’t let him hurt you.”

Sam went to answer when the front door opened. Sam glanced up and she froze. “Brennan. I thought you weren’t going to be back until later,” Sam said.
Brennan walked in and shut the door behind him. “I got done early and figured I would come home,” He said before his eyes went to Valerie. “Ah Valerie. To what do I owe the pleasure to see you holding my niece…”

Sophie felt her muscles tense as Brendan walked in. She had been hoping to get Lizzie out before she actually had to deal with him. As it was, keeping her composure when she wanted nothing more than to punch him in the face would be difficult. “Oh, nothing much. We need to have a little talk, though.” she replied. “Care to sit?” she asked, motioning to the couch.

Brennan looked at her and his eyes narrowed. ”I wouldn’t. I would prefer to stand and I would prefer you hand my niece over to Samantha,” Brennan said to her

Sophie smiled maliciously. “I would if this was your niece. Actually maybe not even then. No offence but you shouldn’t be trusted with a child.” she replied. “Brendan. I don’t want you to get in more trouble than you have to be in. Did you know that kidnapping a child is a federal offence? That means the FBI gets involved, and my coworkers really don’t want the FBI poking around here. If they decide I’m being too nice to you about this they’ll come and deal with you themselves and they don’t believe in mercy.”

Brennan looked at her. ”Its not kidnapping if my sister knows I have her,” he said to Valerie. ”Now. I will NOT ask you again. Hand over my niece to Samantha and no one will get hurt.”

Sophie rolled her eyes. “The police were already involved, which was a really close call. We know exactly who’s child this is.” she replied. “Even if you were able to hurt me, several other people would come after you. See, unlike you I have people watching my back.” It was a bit of a bluff since she hadn’t been involved in the gang in a while, but she was sure Jason would be enough to do a lot of damage. Besides, she was trained in enough self defense to get by in worse situations and she had her knife.

Lizzie began to whine in Sophie’s arms as she moved her head searching for food. It was about the time to start feeding her again.
”You know what you little shit. I’m sick and tired of you meddling in shit you don’t belong in,” Brennan snapped at her as Lizzie started crying because she couldn’t find the food she wanted since Sophie wasn’t the one breastfeeding her

“I’m just trying to do my job, sir,” Sophie grinned. “So, Sam. Tell me, when you said he wants this baby to pay off debts, does that mean holding her for ransom or human trafficking?” she asked, partially to annoy Brendan and partially to determine whether he’d risk injuring the baby by attacking her while she was holding Lizzie.
