The First Move
Charley hated her literature class. She loved literature on its own - in fact she’d read through most of the classics already - but between rereading a particularly boring selection of books and the sheer number of discussions she had to sit through she couldn’t stand a whole hour in the classroom. She’d rather write an essay than contribute to a conversation about how Romeo and Juliet were so perfect for each other. The fact was that they weren’t. Romeo had just been fixated on people he couldn’t have and Juliet wanted an escape from her parents and the engagement they were setting up. If their relationship had lasted longer than three days they would have realized how little they cared for each other as people.
She was propped up on her elbow with her cheek against her hand trying not to let her eyes close all the way when he finally spoke up. Her eyes flitted open and fixed on him. "Right but, like, you have to remember these were kids. It’s more like a high school romance than a true love story." His green eyes were fixed on her when he said that and she thought she spotted a trace of pink on his cheeks as he realized she was looking at him.
"A high school romance that lasts forever." she rolled her eyes. She wouldn’t have talked - she tried to avoid drawing attention to herself during this sort of thing so she wasn’t expected to chime in - but she had to play off the fact that she’d been staring. "When you die that’s that. There’s no chance at a future it’s just... the end. So you can’t really say whether they would have stayed together or not, but in a single moment they decided to make sure the rest of their lives were bound together."
"Right well that is a very interesting subject we can return to later." the teacher interrupted. "For now it’s time to wrap up. Everyone please remember to get through chapter 5 of our new book by next class." A brief groan echoed through the room but the mood was shifted as the bell rang and everyone began eagerly getting their stuff together. They had to get lunch then go to a pep rally. For some reason Charley had never understood, people really loved pep rallies at her current school.
"Jasper!" she called, catching up to the green eyed boy as he left the classroom.
"Charley," he greeted, "Whats up?"
"Come with me!" she said, grabbing his arm and tugging him out a side door to the school. It was a long way around to the cafeteria so no one bothered to take it. She placed a hand on his shoulder and stood on her tip toes to lock lips with his.
After a brief moment he pulled back. "Charley, wha-" His words fell but she could read the rest of the question in his eyes. What are you doing?
She did her best to ignore the flurry of nerves that rose up in her stomach. "You want this, right? I didn’t misread you?" she asked, large eyes gazing up at him. She was relatively new here so she hadn't really gotten to know many people, but she'd assumed she could read them well enough.
"Yes but do you?" he replied. She nodded her head, not sure what to say. What she wanted was him, so why did he have to make it complicated? He must have seen the flash of frustration in her eyes because he added "I don’t want you getting into anything you don’t like."
In his face the only thing she read was concern and it melted her heart. She rolled her eyes and pulled him into another kiss. This time he kissed her back
