Mackenzie heard what her grandmother asked and she went to open her mouth to respond but Sophie cut in. She sighed in relief as she did. She heard Sophie and followed them into the kitchen ”I didn’t until I met Soph,” Mack said to her. ”Growing up I was only really allowed to drink water…”

Mackenzie heard what her grandmother said and she looked at Sophie. Her ears perked up as she heard a faint cry. ”Um… I’ll be right back,” Mack said softly as she exited the kitchen and went to head to the bedroom to go check on Lizzie.

Sophie heard Lizzie’s cry too, and she nodded as Mack dismissed herself. She studied her grandmother’s impassive face. “You should probably just tell me what you think of her now.” she sighed, ready to hear the worst but hoping for something positive.
“She’s got a better temper than you.” her grandmother commented as the kettle started boiling. Sophie felt like there was a but coming, so she stayed silent as she poured the water for the tea. “You’ll have to keep her in line. If you’re bringing her into the family she is your responsibility.”
Sophie eyed her for a moment before replying. “She’s not a child,” she replied, “She’s perfectly capable of taking care of herself. And, like you said, she has a better temper than mine. I get into more trouble than she ever will.” She turned her back on her grandma to prepare the loose leaf hibiscus tea, then put it in the cup and handed set a timer for five minutes before getting her and Mack’s tea set up.

Mack went upstairs and she smiled as she saw Lizzie. She quickly changed her and then carried her towards the stairs to head downstairs. She really hoped she was making a good impression on Sophie’s grandmother. Mackenzie walked into the kitchen. ”Babe mind getting me a bottle?” Mack asked. She still breastfed but she didn’t want to with company so she would just pump in a bit

"Of course," Sophie said. She grabbed a bottle and handed it to Mack.
"Who's this?" her grandmother asked.
"Elizabeth. She's ours," Sophie replied.
"May I hold her?" her grandmother asked Mackenzie. Sophie chewed at the inside of her cheek. Her grandmother liked children and she was pretty good with them, but Sophie didn't really want any of her family near her daughter.

Mackenzie took the bottle and shook it before sticking it in Lizzie’s mouth. She heard Sophie’s grandmother and she held Lizzie a little tighter. ”Lizzie isn’t really used to anyone but Sophie or myself holding her so no,” Mack said to her

"Alright," her grandmother said, then turned to Sophie. "You know, I took care of you when you were a babe. Your siblings too."
Sophie nodded. "I know. I remember." she replied softly. That had been when her grandfather was alive. He was one of very few people in her family that had genuinely been a nice person.
"So, what do you currently do for work, Mackenzie?" her grandmother asked. Sophie cringed. Apparently they were back to this.

Mackenzie took a seat to be more comfortable feeding Lizzie. ”Since I’m still in school, I currently work at a bookstore a few nights a week and one day during the weekend,” Mack asked. ”Why? Is that going to be an issue?”

"She doesn't really have any ambition, does she?" Soph's grandmother asked, suddenly acting like Mack wasn't in the room. "She'll be eaten alive as a part of our family."
"That kind of sounds like it's our family's problem, not hers." Sophie replied, annoyance lacing her voice. "If it's a problem they don't need to be in my life."
"Don't even joke about turning your back on family." the woman snapped.
Sophie scoffed. "They're not really my family, are they?"
Sophie's grandmother slapped her across the face. Soph didn't bother seeming surprised. She resisted the urge to lift her hand to her stinging face. "Don't disrespect your family like that."
"Here I thought we were playing nice," Sophie rolled her eyes.

Mackenzie heard what her grandmother said and she was going to reply when Sophie ended up saying something. She knew what was going to happen. She’s seen it before. She winced and looked down at Lizzie who had stopped sucking the bottle and her head turned to Sophie and she gave a whine. Mackenzie turned to Sophie’s grandmother. ”And the part where I said I was going to go to college to become a nurse or a teacher doesn’t mean anything apparently,” Mack said. ”And you call yourself her family? What family would lay a hand on their own grandchild?”

"Nurses and teachers are important, but they're not exactly worthy positions." her grandmother replied. "I care about my Sophie. You may not understand this, but she'll get into a lot more trouble with the way she acts if I do nothing."
"Bluebell, it's ok," Sophie muttered. "She has helped me more than she had hurt me."

Mackenzie heard her grandmother and then Sophie. ”No! It’s not okay! Being a nurse is something that I wanted to do since I was a kid. And you’re basically saying that if I’m not something that’s considered more worthy you think that I won’t be able to care for my wife!” Mack said standing up. ”please… take her…” Mack said to Sophie before handing Lizzie off to her and rushing from the room

Sophie took Lizzie as Mack handed her over. Lizzie was crying now, not liking the raised voices. Sophie gently hushed her, humming under her breath as she rocked the baby back and forth. "You should probably go," she told her grandmother. "And we're not going to be doing this again."
Her grandmother narrowed her eyes but a moment later she nodded. "Very well." Sophie led her to the door, then went to find Mack.

Mack spent the remainder of the time after fleeing, in the bathroom. She was seething. She could take care of her fiancé and soon to be wife. She could! How dare anyone tell her she can’t. Mack heard Sophie and she opened the door and stepped out. ”How in the hell do you stand her? I’m sorry… I couldn’t just be quiet..” Mack said
