Sophie shook her head at his question and was about to answer more fully when Mackenzie walked in. She glanced between the two of them then said. “She had every right to.”

Sophie chuckled. “He doesn’t like being told he’s wrong.” she decided to say instead of pointing out how he could have been justified in being mad at Mackenzie because he’d been forced to worry about Sophie because of her choices. Getting into that would just make her seem selfish. “So… I expected you to sleep longer,” she began timidly.

Mack heard what he said. ”Makes sense…” Mack commented. Sophie didn’t like being told she was wrong either. Mack heard what she said and she took a sip of the coffee. ”I didn’t really sleep. I just took a shower,” Mack said. ”I couldn’t really sleep.”

Sophie nodded and took another sip of her tea. "Do you want to talk now?" she asked hesitantly. She'd still prefer to procrastinate, but she knew she had to be honest with Mackenzie if she didn't want this to happen again.

Mack heard her question and she nodded her head. ”Sure we can talk,” Mack said sipping her coffee as she sat on the counter. ”I may not say much. Just take some time to take it in.” Seeing Soph like this was new for her. Sophie was always so bold. Not hesitant.

Sophie nodded. "I know but... You're going to be mad at me no matter what so I may as well just tell you everything." she replied. "I really shouldn't, though, so you can't tell anyone or I'll get in trouble."

Sophie hesitate then shook her head. “No, I’m serious. You have to promise.” she said. “For your sake as much as mine. You can’t tell anyone, now or ever.” It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Mackenzie, but she wasn’t interested in risking angering any of the people she worked with.

Sophie paused, examining Mackenzie’s face for any sign she might be lying before going on. “Ok, so I guess I’ll just start at the beginning then. When I started high school… it wasn’t the beginning of my time at the boarding school but my dad had threatened to cut me off from the credit cards and everything if I didn’t…. Well it doesn’t matter what, but I was terrified. I knew if he did while I was at school I wouldn’t be able to grab any of my stuff and selling things was my fallback plan so I panicked. I reached out to my mother. I wasn’t really supposed to know who she was, but I’d gone looking before. She was a part of this local gang and I joined to make some money of my own.” she shook her head. “The details of that don’t matter, what matters is that a friend from those times had moved to New York and so when I got here I got back in contact with him and started working with him. Taking his place, really, he’s rising through the ranks. And that’s what I’m involved in. It’s safe enough because I’ve got people that will watch my back, I’m not put in real danger.”

Mack heard what she said and really listened to her. ”So you’re taking over whatever this thing is and you claim it’s safe right? Yet you don’t come home some nights, you don’t answer your phone and you got fucking shot while doing this job that you claim is fucking safe,” Mack said to her.

Sophie frowned, her hand reaching up to the shot shoulder. “That was an accident and I’m dealing with the person that put me in that situation.” she countered calmly. “This is work I have experience with and the worst that can happen is being picked up by the cops, which won’t be a problem because I know how to keep a cover.”

Mack got down and set her mug in the sink. ”All I’m going to day is I don’t like your so called job,” Mack said. ”I don’t like that you don’t come home, you don’t answer your phone and when you do come home, you’re injured some sort of way and you immediately go to our room to do who knows what.”

Sophie shrugged. “You don’t have to like it, but it is what it is.” she replied. “To be honest I’d probably be staying out late and forgetting to answer my phone even if I had a more standard job. That’s just who I am.” she added. She wasn’t going to lie, even though she knew doing so might have protected Mackenzie’s feelings a bit. “Are you going to tell me about your run in with your mom?” she asked in a softer tone.
