The last two years of Danielle's life has been nothing but running away from her past and her present. She ran away from her parents house when she was 15 because she couldn't take living with her abusive parents anymore. No one took her claims seriously because her parents were important members of society. No one could ever see her parents for what they were; abusers. So when she decided to finally leave Massachusetts and go to New York City (yes she had done her research and found that the world's largest women's shelter was there), she knew the only way to do that was to hitchhike. She knew that was going to come with a price and boy did she learn about it fairly easy. The sexual abuse she found herself in was frightening. So when she finally found a driver who actually treated her with care, she was shocked. Even more shocked when she took a wad of cash from him before he dropped her off in the city.
For the last few months, Danielle made use of the women's shelter for a bed when it was cold or raining, or when she decided she needed food. She still had the wad of cash the driver left her but she wanted to save that for when she absolutely needed it. She also wanted to go to the shelter because there was a guy there who was a volunteer that had definitely caught Danielle's eye. She was too nervous to speak to him but she often watched him from afar, and she knew that he would never notice her. After all, who would be interested in a homeless runaway?
While she's frequented the shelter for the last few months, for the last two weeks, she hasn't been seen. She's kept her distance and stayed hidden because she had mixed in with the wrong people, and came across the wrong person. Now that person was out for her and she didn't want to risk anything. Today, however, she was making her way to the shelter for some food because eating scraps of food just wasn't cutting it for her. As she entered the main dining hall, a group of girls ran up to her.
"What the hell Dani? We thought you died," Mary said hugging her tightly.
"Don't ever do that again," Sammie said as Mary let go. She engulfed Danielle in a hug, hugging her tightly as if she would disappear.
"I'm okay. Promise," Danielle said. "But I am starving and in need of sleep and a shower..."
"Food!" Mary said hooking her arm in Danielle's and making her way over towards the food line.
