Appearance
Dakota is a short, and skinny boy, standing a little under four feet tall and weighing about fifty pounds. He almost always has his hearing-assist-dog with him.
He usually communicates with American Sign Language, or with written notes. He often carries a notepad around with him, but not always. He can utter a verbal cry, but will not speak.
He has brown skin and black hair. His hair is a little long, and is usually messy, even though his mother's make him comb it once a day.
He usually dresses simply. His wardrobe contains mostly jeans, shorts, t-shirts, button-down shirts, tennis shoes, and sandals.

Personality
With his family, Dakota is usually happy and open. With people outside his family, he is usually nervous and shy. He really loves his family and his worst fear, even before his brother and Mommy died, is that something will happen to them and they will be gone someday.
Dakota has always been eager to please, especially with his own family, and well behaved. If his mother’s ask him to do something he does not want to do, he will do it, although he typically will express his distaste. He really likes being helpful, even if that involves doing chores.
He likes fun things and playing outside. He likes going for walks and swinging. Dakota has always really liked animals. The only animal he does not like are squirrels, who scare him, and he tenses up whenever he sees one. He also really likes nature and cares about the environment. He also likes stories, including reading and watching movies.
He likes spending time outside. When he gets the chance, he likes to explore new places. He likes learning, mainly social studies, and science. He also likes language arts. He is not a big fan of math, which is his worst subject. He has a vivid imagination. He also likes playing pretend, in various different settings, and often involving animals.
He hates discrimination, especially audism, and adults who are jerks. He dislikes children who are jerks, the dark, crowds, seeing people talking, and the ideas of war and revenge.
He's known he was adopted ever since he can remember. Despite his tendency to get curious about things, he has never wondered about his biological family.

Background
Dakota bounded with her biological parents and big sister, but over time, they began to realize that there was something unusual about him. They took him to the doctor, who determined that he was partially deaf, and his parents were so upset that they decided they did not want him anymore. Despite protests from his big sister, they abandoned him.
He was put in a foster home where he was often hungry and always dirty, but was fed just enough to survive. He would crawl around on the floor and he would sometimes act up a bit, or even just get in the way of his foster parents, and he would get punched or kicked on the side of his head, which is probably how he went from partially deaf to completely deaf. The social worker found out and took him to another foster home, where they were a lot nicer to him, but the social worker took him away only days later because they had found a couple who wanted to adopt him.
At first, Dakota would not bond with his new mothers, or expect them to take care of him. Within a year, he was very close to his mothers and did depend on them.
When Dakota was three, Jason was adopted. They quickly became best friends.
When Dakota was four, he was enrolled in a special ed preschool. He was the only deaf kid in the class but had his own aid, who signed for him and such, but she was the only person he liked at all. He attempted to befriend some other kids, but they did not know sign language and had to communicate with him through his aid and they didn’t like that so they started ignoring him. The teacher seemed to dislike him and he didn’t know why, although he was also the only kid with same-sex parents in the class. After about a month of this, he was pulled out and put in an online school.
Dakota and Jason liked playing on playgrounds. Occasionally they would encounter children who would play games that require little to no verbal communication with them, and sometimes they would encounter kids who would pick on Dakota, but most children lost interest in Dakota once they found out he was deaf. Fortunately, Jason never wanted to leave Dakota’s side.
When Dakota was six, four-year-old Jason started preschool. Dakota was very worried, but Jason came home having had a fun time and revealed that he had made a new friend. Dakota tried to be happy for him, but he was jealous. Life went on, and they continued being best friends, but Jason continued going to school and telling Dakota about his school friends. Sometimes Jason even got invited to birthday parties and playdates. Jason tried to invite another kid to their house and insisted on including Dakota, and it went okay but the kid never wanted to come back again.
When Dakota was eight, he and Jason were playing in their backyard when a rabid squirrel jumped down from a tree and tried to attack them, and Dakota jumped in front of Jason to protect him. The squirrel managed to bite Dakota before their Mommy ran out and got in front of them. Dakota and his Mommy had to go to the doctor and get their bites treated. After that, they each had to have multiple rabies shots and Dakota had to have his first. He cried a lot, because they were the most painful shots he’d ever gotten, but he cooperated until they were over.
A few months later, Dakota and his Mommy walked Jason to his school on what seemed to be a normal summer day. When they were approaching the school, Jason’s friend called him and he hurried up and ran across the school parking lot. A car came toward him, and their Mommy tried to push him out of the way, and they both got ran over and died.
Dakota became very sad without his brother and Mommy. He also was suddenly afraid to get too far away from his Mama. His deaf aunt, from his Mommy's side of the family, and her deaf husband came to visit for the funeral, with their two hearing-assist-dogs. They stayed for his ninth birthday, which was only a few days later. They gave him Rose, one of their dogs, claiming that he needed her more.
Rose soon became his new best friend and went everywhere with him. With Rose by his side, his previous fears basically diminished. His Mama started leaving him home with just Rose and letting him go out and play with just Rose, and he was comfortable enough with Rose that it worked.
Not long after that, his Mama got a new job and they had to move. He is mostly excited, although he wishes that his Mommy and brother with with them.
