Sophie nodded as Mackenzie walked away, pouring herself a glass of water. Then she pulled the old chicken out of the fridge and tore it up into a plastic bowl. “Come,” she called softly and clicked her tongue. The dog came running into the room and Sophie put the bowl on the floor and watched as the dog sniffed at it then picked out a piece of the chicken and dragged it across the room to eat it. “Right, I won’t be giving you messy food then,” she muttered. She sat back for half a moment, then grabbed a sponge and the kitchen spray and began scrubbing the counters. They were mostly clean but there were some tougher things that clung to it. She could feel it when she ran her hand across them.

Mackenzie laid Lizzie down in her crib and then made her way back to Sophie. "This is why we can't have a dog. All they do is make a huge mess," Mackenzie said to Sophie. She saw Sophie cleaning the counters. "I already cleaned the kitchen today."

Sophie shrugged. “She’s not making much of a mess, she’s eating the food she drags around.” she replied, eyeing the dog. “Ivy or Millie?” she asked. She continued to clean the counters, pressing down as hard as she could with the rough side of the sponge.

Mackenzie heard what she said and she put her head in her hands as she lent against the counter. "I'm not naming her because then it becomes personal," Mack said to Sophie. She really didn't want this dog in the house at all.

Sophie rolled her eyes. “Come on. I’ll take care of her and feed her and if she has to go to the vet I’ll deal with it.” she said. Having finished scrubbing the counters, she turned the sponge to the soft side and wiped the extra liquid and grime off the surface. She ran a hand across the slick stone and smiled. Now she had to get the stove and the floors and then the other rooms. She set to work again.

Mackenzie heard her and she ran a hand through her hair. "Sophie... let's just go to bed okay? We can deal with your impulse issues in the morning," Mack said to her as she took hold of her arm gently.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she replied, tugging away from Mackenzie. “And I’m not tired. You can go to bed, I’m going to keep cleaning.”

“Mackenzie,” Sophie growled as her fiancé pulled her closer. Why couldn’t she just let her stay out here longer? “I’m not going to bed right now. I will once I finish up, ok?”

"I'm worried about you baby..." Mack said softly tucking a piece of hair behind Sophie's ear. "Come on..." She pressed a soft kiss to Sophie's cheeks and then her lips.

Sophie frowned. She was about to answer when her phone buzzed, her father’s name popping up on the screen. “I have to take this,” she said. She swiped to accept the call and held the phone up to her ear. “Hello?” she asked in a singsong voice.
“One thousand four hundred and twenty eight dollars?” he asked, pronouncing every word slowly and deliberately.
“Was it that little?” she asked. When she’d gone shopping she had used one of her dad’s credit cards that he forgot to cut off. “Give me another day, I’m sure I can get it up to a nice even two grand.”
“Sophia Foster!” he snapped. Then he went on and on yelling at her.
Sophie felt herself getting angry, not about what he was saying but because he was still talking. “Daddy, dearest,” she drawled, cutting him off, “I don’t care. You’ve already done everything you can to try to put a leash on me and it’s never worked. So go ahead, threaten your worst. Even if you follow through it won’t be enough to hurt me.” She hung up the phone. “God, he’s ridiculous,” she muttered. “So. Brownies!” she perked up and went to grab the ingredients from the shelves.

Mackenzie heard Sophie and she could hear Sophie's father on the phone. She shook her head. "Sophie... you can't just frivolously spend a ridiculous amount of money for no reason," Mackenzie said to her. "As much as I love the necklace and everything you got, you have to return it." Mackenzie saw her going to get the stuff for brownies. "It's nearing midnight Sophie. I'm exhausted and it's too late for brownies. Let's go to bed."

Sophie shrugged. “The money doesn’t really effect me. It doesn’t effect him either, I used to spend way more than that.” she replied. “You don’t have to stay up with me. Get some rest, I’ll be in soon enough.”

Mackenzie heard her and she frowned. "If you don't come to bed with me now, don't bother coming into the bed at all tonight..." Mack said to her. She waited a full 5 minutes before she shook her head. "Goodnight Sophia." Mack turned and she made her way to her and Sophie's room. Sophie could find somewhere else to sleep that night.

Sophie narrowed her eyes. She didn’t like the threat in Mackenzie’s voice. Nonetheless? She muttered, “Sleep well, Bluebell” as her fiancé retreated to the bedroom.

That night, Sophie made brownies then cleaned the apartment as deeply as she could before sitting down in front of her computer. She’d gotten an idea for a book and figured she might as well try to write it. She got lost in the writing, and by the time she was interrupted by Lizzie waking up there were only ten minutes left until her alarm was supposed to go off. She turned off the alarm then went to Lizzie’s room and picked her up, gently rocking her to calm her down.
